A 22-year-old Canton man died early Friday after his car left the road, struck a tree and caught fire on State Route 43 in Sandy Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 5:59 a.m. near Indian Run Road. Troopers said Michael D. Weaver was driving a 2013 BMW 528xi northbound when the car went off the right side of the road, hit a tree and burst into flames.

Two passersby pulled Weaver from the burning vehicle before it became fully engulfed, Mohawk Valley Fire Chief Jim Marraccini said.

Weaver was taken to Aultman Hospital by Quad EMS, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

“There were two passersby that stopped right after the accident happened,” Marraccini said. “The vehicle started on fire but both citizens, without due regard for their own safety, physically removed the driver from the burning car. One is a nurse, the other was a worker dressed in construction-type clothing. They were administering first aid when I arrived. I do not have their names but they risked their own safety to render help to someone in dire need. Thank God for Good Samaritans!”

Mohawk Valley Fire and Quad EMS assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
