A 19-year-old man died Thursday afternoon after being shot, and a Canton man is now in custody, though officials remain tight-lipped about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the Stark County Coroner’s Office, the victim was pronounced dead at 3:42 p.m. at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital. His identity has not been released to allow time for family notifications, investigator Tammy Wilkes said.

Wilkes declined to provide further details and referred all inquiries to the Canton Police Department, which has yet to respond to questions about the shooting.

Later that evening, at approximately 6 p.m., 25-year-old Deontae K. McCollum was booked into the Stark County Jail on charges of murder and felonious assault. Jail records indicate that McCollum is accused of shooting a victim multiple times, resulting in a fatality.

Authorities have not confirmed whether McCollum is linked to the 19-year-old’s death. Details such as the location of the shooting and the name of the victim listed in McCollum’s arrest have not been released.
