Stark County has already matched its total number of fatal vehicle crashes and traffic-related deaths from all of 2025, raising concerns among local officials about roadway safety.

According to the Stark County Traffic Fatality Review Committee, the county recorded 31 fatal crashes resulting in 33 deaths through the end of September 2026. Those figures match the totals recorded during the entire 2025 calendar year, despite three months remaining in 2026.

The committee met Oct. 20 to review third-quarter crash data and identify contributing factors behind the fatalities.

Between July 1 and Sept. 30, Stark County recorded 12 fatal crashes that claimed 13 lives.

According to the committee’s findings, drugs and/or alcohol were contributing factors in nine of those crashes, accounting for 75% of the fatal crashes during the third quarter.

Seat belts were not worn in five of the crashes.

Two fatal crashes involved motorcycles, and neither rider was wearing a helmet. Both motorcyclists died from their injuries.

The committee also reported that one of the fatal crashes involved an electric bicycle, commonly referred to as an e-bike.

The findings highlight concerns about impaired driving, seat belt use and motorcycle safety as officials work to address the county’s rising traffic death toll.

In response to the findings, the committee is urging motorists and pedestrians to take additional precautions to prevent further tragedies.

Officials emphasized the importance of avoiding impaired driving, wearing seat belts and motorcycle helmets, reducing speed and eliminating distractions behind the wheel.

The committee also encouraged drivers to remain alert for pedestrians, particularly near intersections and during low-light conditions.

Pedestrians are urged to use crosswalks and sidewalks when available, follow traffic signals and make themselves visible to approaching motorists.

According to the committee, seat belts can reduce the risk of fatal injuries by approximately half, while motorcycle helmets significantly reduce the risk of serious head injuries.

With the final quarter of 2026 underway, Stark County has already reached last year’s total number of traffic fatalities, underscoring the importance of roadway safety as officials continue monitoring fatal crashes throughout the county.
