Authorities in Portage County are searching for a suspect accused of shooting a woman at a residence in Atwater Township on Tuesday, prompting precautionary lockdowns at two area school districts.

According to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect fled the scene following the shooting and was last known to be in the area of state Route 183 in Atwater.

The sheriff’s office issued a public alert Tuesday morning asking residents to be on the lookout for a white male believed to be in his late teens or early 20s.

Authorities described the suspect as having sandy-colored, shoulder-length hair and wearing a T-shirt and pants. He was also reportedly carrying a tan backpack.

Investigators said the suspect may be traveling in a small black car with black rims.

As a precaution, Waterloo Local Schools and Southeast Local Schools have been placed on soft lockdowns until further notice.

The sheriff’s office has not released additional information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or the condition of the female victim.

Authorities have also not identified the suspect or confirmed whether he is armed.

Anyone with information about the suspect or his whereabouts is urged to contact the Portage County Sheriff’s Office at 330-296-5100, option 9.

The investigation remains ongoing.
