5-year-old boy found dead after flash flooding in Ohio, sheriff says

A 5-year-old boy who was reported missing following a flash flood in Monroe County was found dead Sunday evening after an extensive search involving deputies, firefighters and community members, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Dispatchers received a report of the missing child at approximately 7:14 p.m. Sunday in the Lewisville community following a recent flash flood event.

Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, members of the Lewisville Volunteer Fire Department and numerous volunteers from the community immediately began searching the area.

Following a coordinated search, crews located the child’s body in a creek drainage area near State Route 78, the sheriff’s office said.

The circumstances surrounding the child’s death remain under investigation by detectives with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have not released the child’s identity or any additional details.

In a statement, Sheriff Derek Norman extended condolences to the child’s family and loved ones.

“We ask the public to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers and to respect their privacy as they grieve this tragic loss,” the statement said.
