6-year-old child dies following Plain Township house fire; investigation underway

Editors note: The Stark County Sheriff’s Office originally said that a 4-year-old died in the fire. They have since issued a correction, stating the child was six years old.

A 6-year-old child has died following a house fire Friday evening in Plain Township, according to the Stark County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 5:08 p.m. to the 2500 block of Cathy Drive NE for a reported residential fire. The Plain Township Fire Department and deputies from the Stark County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

An adult male and two children were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities said one of the children, a 6-year-old, died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The adult male remains hospitalized in stable condition, while the second child is listed in critical but stable condition, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Plain Township Fire Department and Stark County Sheriff’s Office were assisted at the scene by the Nimishillen Township Fire Department, Canton Fire Department and Canton Township Fire Department.

The cause of the fire has not been released. The incident remains under investigation by the Stark County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office.
