A 5-year-old child died Sunday after an incident involving a compact earth-moving machine at a Plain Township residence, according to the Stark County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to Mercy Hospital at approximately 3:40 p.m. Sunday, June 21, after receiving a report of an injured child.
Preliminary information from investigators indicates the child was believed to be inside a home in the 2400 block of Bur Oak Street NE while the child’s mother was inside the residence and the father was operating a compact earth-moving machine in the backyard.
Authorities said the child went outside at some point. While backing the machine, the father discovered the child on the ground with severe injuries.
The father transported the child to Mercy Hospital, where the child was later pronounced dead.
According to the sheriff’s office, the father suffered injuries after jumping from the machine and was treated at Mercy Hospital.
The Stark County Sheriff’s Office and the Stark County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
