A 1-year-old girl was killed Wednesday after being attacked by the family’s pit bull at their Dover Township home, according to the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office.
Detective Capt. Adam Fisher said the attack appeared to be unprovoked and occurred while the family was going about its normal daily routine.
Emergency responders from the sheriff’s office and the Dover Fire Department arrived at the home shortly after a 911 call was placed by family members. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators with the sheriff’s office and the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office also responded.
The family’s 8-year-old pit bull was euthanized following the incident.
An autopsy is being conducted by the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office. Fisher said Ohio law requires an autopsy when a child under the age of 2 dies unexpectedly and was previously in good health.
No criminal charges have been filed, though the investigation remains ongoing.
