A Wooster man was taken into custody Wednesday night after police say he fired a gunshot inside the emergency department at Aultman Orrville Hospital.
According to the Orrville Police Department, officers were dispatched to the hospital, located at 832 S. Main St., around 10:04 p.m. for an unrelated call regarding suspected narcotics found on a patient.
An officer arrived at the facility at approximately 10:11 p.m. and, upon entering the emergency department, heard a single gunshot coming from one of the evaluation rooms. Police said the incident was not connected to the initial narcotics call.
By 10:13 p.m., officers had detained a male suspect without incident. He was identified as Rodney Johnson of Wooster.
No officers discharged their firearms during the response, and no injuries were reported.
Johnson was transported to the Wayne County Jail, where he is being held on charges of felonious assault and improper discharging of a firearm at or into a habitation.
The case remains under investigation and has been referred to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review and possible additional charges.
Orrville Police credited the hospital staff, responding officers, and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office for their quick, coordinated response, which ensured the safety of everyone involved.
