The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles is urging residents to be cautious of a scam involving fraudulent text messages that falsely claim to be from the BMV and demand payment for traffic violations.

According to the agency, multiple Ohioans have reported receiving messages stating they owe a traffic fine and must pay immediately to avoid suspension of their driver’s license. The texts include links and are part of a phishing scheme designed to steal personal and financial information.

“If you receive this text, do not fall for this scam,” BMV Registrar Charlie Norman said in a statement. “Do not click any links and delete the text. The Ohio BMV will never send a text message demanding payment or requesting personal information.”

The BMV is encouraging residents to report such scams to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to the scam should contact their local law enforcement agency.
