A woman injured in a crash last month on U.S. Route 36 in Tuscarawas County has died from her injuries, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the two-vehicle crash happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, near the entrance ramp for Interstate 77 southbound in Salem Township. Ralph E. Mizer, 85, of West Lafayette, was driving a gray 2015 Ford Fusion northeast on Route 36 with his wife, 83-year-old Judy K. Mizer, in the passenger seat.
According to investigators, Jonathon N. Engle, 26, of Cambridge, was driving a red 2013 Chevrolet Malibu southwest on Route 36 and attempted to turn left onto the I-77 southbound ramp when he failed to yield to oncoming traffic. Engle’s vehicle was struck on the passenger side by the Mizers’ car.
Engle sustained minor injuries and was taken by Tri-County EMS to Genesis Coshocton Medical Center. Both Ralph and Judy Mizer suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and were also transported to Genesis Coshocton before being transferred to the intensive care unit at Akron General Hospital.
Judy Mizer died from her injuries on Saturday, June 7 — nearly four weeks after the crash.
Troopers said Engle was driving under a license suspension at the time of the crash and did not have a valid driver’s license. He was cited and found guilty. The patrol said additional charges will be submitted to the Tuscarawas County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
