A 26-year-old man was taken into custody Sunday afternoon following a standoff with deputies at a home on Schneider’s Crossing Road NW, according to the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began around 3:16 p.m. when dispatchers received a report from a family member who said the man might harm himself. The caller also said the man had been in a dispute earlier that day and had possibly threatened a neighbor.
Deputies arrived to find a broken front window and belongings scattered in the yard. Authorities attempted to contact the man by phone, but he was uncooperative. They were also advised that weapons were likely inside the home.
After several failed attempts to get the man to answer the door, deputies heard loud bangs from inside the house. They forced entry and issued multiple commands over a cruiser’s public address system. Just before deploying a sheriff’s K-9, the man surrendered at the front door to avoid being bitten.
He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the county jail, where officials say he will undergo a safety evaluation.
