Local school leaders, elected officials, educators and community members are coming together next month to speak out against proposed state education budget cuts.
A public “Rally for Public Education” will be held Tuesday, June 10, at 6 p.m. at the Canton Memorial Civic Center, 1101 Market Ave. N. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Organizers say the event aims to highlight the importance of fully funding public schools and the potential impact of state-level funding reductions on local districts.
“Public education is the foundation of strong communities and a strong future,” Canton Mayor William V. Sherer II said in a statement. “As leaders, we have a responsibility to ensure our schools are fully funded and our students are fully supported.”
Sherer said he and other Stark County mayors stand in solidarity with superintendents, parents and educators in urging the state to protect critical education resources.
Plain Local School District Superintendent Brent May and Canton City School District Superintendent Jeff Talbert will speak during the rally about how the proposed funding cuts could affect their schools. A panel of superintendents from across Stark County will also discuss the broader implications for public education in the region.
The public is encouraged to attend the event to learn more about the budget proposals and show support for local schools.
