SWAT responds to welfare check in Massillon; man dies by suicide

A SWAT response to a welfare check in Massillon ended in tragedy Monday evening when a 34-year-old man died by suicide, authorities said.

Officers with the Massillon Police Department were called around 5 p.m. May 12 to a residence in the 1000 block of 3rd Street NE to check on the man, who appeared to be in distress. As the situation escalated, the Canton Regional SWAT Team was requested and arrived around 6 p.m. to assist.

Just before 7 p.m., the man attempted to take his own life.

Members of the SWAT team and Massillon Fire Department medics administered immediate lifesaving aid and transported him to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

His name has not been released. The incident remains under investigation.
