The treasurer of Carrollton Exempted Village School District has been indicted by a Carroll County grand jury on felony charges of theft in office and tampering with records.

According to the Carroll County Clerk of Courts, a summons has been issued for Amy Spears, of Carrollton, to appear in Carroll County Common Pleas Court on May 22 to answer to the charges, both third-degree felonies. The indictment was returned by the grand jury on Wednesday, May 7.

In a statement issued Thursday, the school district confirmed it was notified of the indictment on May 8.

“Prior to this indictment, Mrs. Spears requested a leave of absence and the Board of Education granted that leave on April 1, 2025. At that time, an interim treasurer was appointed,” the district said in the statement.

District officials said they have been cooperating with the Ohio Auditor of State’s Office throughout the investigation and will continue working with both the auditor and the Carroll County Prosecutor’s Office “to seek restitution of any District funds that have been lost.”

The district also said it is reviewing its reimbursement procedures “to prevent future occurrences of this nature.”

Officials declined to comment further, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
