A Stark County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed two dogs Sunday afternoon after they reportedly charged at him while he was responding to a call about aggressive animals.

The incident occurred in the 2200 block of 22nd Street NE in Canton. According to the Stark County Sheriff’s Office, residents at the home contacted authorities after two stray dogs they had been feeding began acting aggressively toward them.

A deputy arrived at the scene and initially communicated with the residents through their Ring doorbell camera, the sheriff’s office said. During that interaction, the two dogs allegedly ran toward the deputy and cornered him between the house and a parked vehicle.

The deputy discharged his firearm, striking and killing both animals.

Authorities used microchip data to identify the dogs’ owner, who lives several miles away. The owner told investigators the dogs had been loose since Saturday. He was cited for allowing the animals to roam at large, officials said.

The deputy was not placed on administrative leave, and the incident remains under investigation.
