A 17-year-old student at Lake Middle/High School was arrested Wednesday afternoon after deputies found a loaded handgun in his backpack, according to the Stark County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies assigned as school resource officers for the Lake Local School District responded to a report around 1:20 p.m. that a student may have been armed. Upon investigation, they located a loaded Glock pistol inside the student’s backpack.
The teen was taken into custody and charged with one count of receiving stolen property, a fourth-degree felony, and one count of illegal conveyance or possession of a deadly weapon or dangerous ordnance in a school safety zone, a fifth-degree felony.
Authorities said there is currently no indication the student intended to use the weapon to harm anyone at the school.
