An 8-year-old boy died Monday evening after what investigators believe was an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a home on Evergreen Avenue in Akron.

Police responded to the residence in the 1500 block of Evergreen Avenue around 4:15 p.m. after receiving a 911 call. Officers found the child with a gunshot wound to the torso. He was transported to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities have not released the child’s name, citing the ongoing investigation.

Preliminary findings indicate the boy accessed an unsecured handgun while on the second floor of the home and accidentally shot himself. The child’s mother, who was home at the time of the incident, immediately called for help.

The handgun was recovered at the scene, police said.

The investigation remains active as officials work to determine further details surrounding the incident.
