New developments have emerged in the recent incident at Buckeye Career Center, where a soft lockdown was initiated Tuesday morning following what was believed to be an electronic threat sent to a student by a family member.

Initially, officials reported that all students, staff, and visitors from Buckeye Career Center, Tusky Valley, Tuscarawas Central Catholic, and Carrollton were secured out of an abundance of caution. The New Philadelphia Police Department, Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, and Stark County Sheriff’s Office collaborated on the investigation, which led to the detainment of the student’s relative.

However, further investigation revealed that the student admitted to sending the threatening email to himself in an effort to frame the relative. The relative detained in connection with the alleged threat has been released by New Philadelphia police.

A report on the incident will now be sent to the prosecutor’s office for review. Officials emphasized that at no time were any students, staff, or visitors in immediate danger, and the lockdown was lifted once authorities initially detained the relative.
