The Canton Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 9:59 a.m. Sunday on Shorb Avenue NW, where residents were found using a garden hose in an attempt to extinguish flames that erupted on their back porch.
The fire at the two-and-a-half-story home, located at 712 Shorb Ave NW, was reportedly started by an electrical heater on the back porch. A neighbor, alerted by the sound of a dog howling from its cage on the porch, initially intervened with a fire extinguisher to suppress the flames. The neighbor then transported the burned dog to a veterinary hospital. The animal’s condition is currently unknown.
Damage from the fire was limited to the porch and siding, officials said. No injuries were reported among firefighters or civilians. The Canton Fire Department is investigating the incident.
