The incident occurred around 9:35 a.m. when the student immediately notified a teacher and a Jackson Township School Resource Officer of the discovery. The school security team quickly responded and conducted a thorough sweep of the area.

“At this time, our department continues to investigate the incident,” the Jackson Township Police Department said in a statement. “It is unknown when or how the round of ammunition came into the school. There have been no threats to the school. The school is secure and all students are safe.”

The Jackson Local School District also released a notice, stating that the shelter-in-place, which began at 9:37 a.m., was lifted at 10:01 a.m. School administrators are working closely with local law enforcement to investigate the situation.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the school was placed in a shelter-in-place at 9:37 a.m. Our school security team followed shelter-in-place protocols and conducted a sweep of the middle school. The shelter-in-place was lifted at 10:01 a.m.,” the statement read. “Jackson Memorial Middle School students are safe, and the school has returned to a regular schedule.”
