The Canton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a one-car crash that occurred in the early hours of Sept. 16, 2024, when a vehicle struck the Taggarts ice cream shop at 1401 Fulton Rd. NW in Canton, Stark County.
The driver, identified as 23-year-old Preston C. Cingle, whose listed address is homeless, was operating a silver 2007 Honda Accord at approximately 2:12 a.m. prior to the crash. A trooper from the Canton Post had attempted to initiate a traffic stop when Cingle attempted to flee.
According to reports, Cingle performed a high-speed backing maneuver from 14th St., crossing Fulton Rd. before crashing into the Taggarts building. He fled the scene on foot but was apprehended shortly thereafter by Canton police officers.
The owner of the Honda Accord told authorities that her vehicle had been stolen from her garage. Taggarts sustained extensive damage as a result of the crash, but no injuries were reported.
Cingle was taken into custody and booked into the Stark County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including:
- Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle (F-4)
- Failure to Comply/Fleeing from a Police Officer (F-3)
- Vandalism (F-4)
- Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence (M-1)
- Driving Under Suspension (M-1)
- Hit-Skip (M-1)
- No Tail Lights (MM)
The investigation is ongoing.
