The fire, located at 1081 Rosemary Blvd., involves chemicals that are burning, creating a hazardous materials (hazmat) situation. Akron Mayor Shammas Malik addressed the public on social media, confirming the seriousness of the situation and the ongoing evacuation efforts by local authorities.

“The Akron Police Department and Akron Fire Department are evacuating a half-mile radius around the commercial fire at 1081 Rosemary Blvd. The building contains chemicals which are burning and creating an unsafe hazmat situation,” Malik posted on Facebook.

The city has opened Firestone Park Community Center (1480 Girard St.) as a reunification center for those displaced by the evacuation. Additional overflow will be sent to Joy Park Community Center (825 Fuller St.), according to the mayor.

Residents are strongly urged to steer clear of the area until further notice as crews work to contain the blaze.
