A 36-year-old man was taken into custody following a reported assault and a lengthy police pursuit that spanned multiple jurisdictions Thursday morning, according to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.
Carroll County 911 received a call at 8:51 a.m. from a woman who reported that she had been assaulted by Thomas J. Snyder of Malvern. While a Carroll County deputy was taking her report, Snyder reportedly sped past the deputy on Alliance Road, prompting an attempt to pursue him. However, the deputy was unable to catch up.
At approximately 11:05 a.m., with assistance from the Minerva Police Department, Snyder was located in the village of Minerva, where a traffic stop was initiated on E Line Street, a statement from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office says. Officers from Canton Police Department’s K-9 unit and the Canton Regional SWAT team were called to assist in the situation.
After 54 minutes of unsuccessful negotiation efforts to have Snyder comply with police, he fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit westbound on State Route 30. The chase lasted for one hour and two minutes before Snyder stopped his vehicle and jumped off the State Route 44 overpass onto State Route 62, where he was apprehended.
Snyder sustained facial and head injuries during the incident and was transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital by Nimishillen EMS. He has since been flown to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital.
No further updates on his condition are currently available.
