The Perry Township, Stark County, community turned out in force Thursday afternoon to support five-year-old Everleigh Brumfield, who was recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. First responders, local families, and even princesses and superheroes participated in a heartfelt parade that stretched from Perry Park to the Brumfields’ home, only a few blocks away.
For Matt and Gina Brumfield, this overwhelming show of love and compassion has been a source of solace as they navigate every parent’s worst nightmare. Just over a week ago, the family received the devastating news that Everleigh’s tumor, located on her brainstem, is terminal. With no cure available, treatment options are limited to extending her life for a few more precious months.
Everleigh’s symptoms appeared gradually, beginning with balance issues and other neurological challenges. Concerned for their daughter’s well-being, Gina took Everleigh to the hospital after repeated falls. Further tests revealed the grim diagnosis.
“That’s where they identified a mass in her brain, and then from an MRI that it’s a cancerous tumor on her brain stem,” Matt Brumfield explained. “It just does not have a cure, just treatment to hopefully give a few extra months.”
Despite the heartbreaking prognosis, the Brumfields find strength through their faith. Matt shared that their belief in Jesus provides peace that defies understanding, even in the darkest moments.
“We have Jesus, and He’s our peace beyond understanding,” Matt said. “I would never have been able to tell another parent in this situation before I was in it that there could be peace, because, by all means, it doesn’t make sense.”
Matt and Gina are focusing on making memories with Everleigh, embracing every joyful moment she brings. They’re considering family trips and outings while making the most of everyday experiences, like visits to Chuck E. Cheese. The Brumfields have purchased a pass for the family to go whenever they feel like it, creating moments of joy in an otherwise difficult time.
“Everleigh’s still full of joy,” Matt said. “When we brought her home, in our fear, we were like, ‘Don’t run, don’t run,’ and all she wanted to do was run through the house and skip.”
The community’s outpouring of love has been profound. Hundreds showed up for the parade, a simple but powerful gesture that lifted the Brumfields’ spirits. From meals to activities, neighbors and strangers alike have stepped up to support the family.
“Just seeing that generosity and all the little things that really don’t matter, and that people are willing to take time out of their days to just show up and show that they care,” Matt reflected. “There’s others around that are hurting. You don’t have to wait to find out they’re in the middle of a storm to show that kindness and love.”
For now, the Brumfields are taking life one day at a time, cherishing every smile from Everleigh and leaning on their faith as they walk this unimaginable journey.
