A residential fire in Stark County on Monday morning claimed the lives of two dogs. The incident occurred in the 1000 block of Cyril Ave SW, prompting the North Lawrence Fire Department to respond at 10:53 a.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy fire coming out of the structure. It was quickly determined that all human occupants were safely outside, but two dogs remained trapped inside.
Firefighters from the first responding engine unit stretched a hose line through the front door, encountering heavy fire conditions in the roof and kitchen. During the firefighting efforts, a roof collapse forced the crew to retreat into the living room, where they continued to face intense heat and flames.
Despite the dangerous conditions, firefighters located one dog in a bedroom and attempted a rescue. The dog was provided oxygen via a pet mask but, unfortunately, did not survive. A second dog was later found and also succumbed to the fire.
Additional crews from mutual aid companies assisted with fire suppression, Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) duties, and other necessary tasks.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office has been requested to investigate the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation at this time.
The homeowner was evaluated on the scene for reasons unrelated to the fire. No other injuries were reported.
