A 12-year-old boy from Stone Creek (Tuscarawas County) sustained an accidental gunshot wound while riding an ATV in Clark Township on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Tim Zimmerly reported that deputies are investigating the incident, which occurred near Township Road 154. The Sheriff’s dispatch received a 911 call about the shooting at approximately 4:43 p.m., and EMS personnel and deputies were dispatched to the scene.

The initial investigation indicates that the boy was transporting a single-shot rifle on a four-wheeler when the rifle fell off the ATV as he traveled through a farm field. Upon hitting the ground, the rifle discharged, and a .22 caliber rimfire bolt action single-shot rifle round struck the boy. The bullet entered his chest and exited through his shoulder, creating a single wound.

Despite the injury, the boy was conscious and alert when EMS arrived. He was transported to a nearby landing zone by East Holmes EMS and then airlifted to Akron Children’s Hospital by Metro Life Flight Helicopter. His condition is currently unknown.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by East Holmes Fire and EMS. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
