An explosion rocked downtown Youngstown on Tuesday afternoon, prompting emergency crews to evacuate people from a building and transport several to the hospital.
The blast occurred shortly before 3 p.m. at the Realty building on East Federal Street, which houses Chase Bank on its ground floor and residential apartments on the upper floors. Residents from the top floors were quickly evacuated.
Chase Bank has assured that they are coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safety of everyone in the building and will assess the damage once it is safe to do so, according to a bank representative.
Fire Chief Barry Finley reported that one individual remains unaccounted for. The missing person’s wife confirmed that he was at work at the time of the explosion, but rescue teams have not yet located him. Finley added that all other occupants of the building have been found.
Witnesses described hearing a loud boom, followed by the sight of smoke and the distinct odor of gas.
Seven individuals are currently receiving medical treatment at Mercy Health, with one person in critical condition, a hospital spokesperson confirmed.
