Authorities are investigating a fatal fire that occurred in a 3-unit apartment building in Jackson Township, Stark County, on Saturday night.
The Jackson Township Fire Department responded to a call at 9:47 pm on May 25th in regards to a residential fire on Harris Ave NW with a person trapped inside. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered flames shooting out from a door and a window of the building.
The person who died in the fire was a 13-year-old boy, according to family.
Jackson Fire Chief Tim Berczik stated, “We were aware that there may still be someone within the apartment unit.”
Chief Berczik extended condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasized the importance of having functional smoke alarms in homes.
The identity of the fire victim has not been disclosed.
Mutual aid support was provided by the Fire Departments of Massillon City and Plain Township. The State Fire Marshals and Jackson Police detectives are collaborating with Jackson Fire officials in the investigation.
The investigation into the cause of the fatal fire is ongoing.
