In a tragic incident, Stark County Sheriff’s deputies discovered the lifeless body of 61-year-old Christine Fite in her residence on 31st Street NE. Authorities suspect that her husband, 62-year-old Byron Fite, shot her before attempting to take his own life, according to officials with the Stark County Sheriff’s Office.
The Stark County Coroner’s Office pronounced Christine Fite dead at 5:57 p.m. Sunday. Inspector William Jones, leading the investigation for the Stark County Sheriff’s Office, reported finding her on the floor of the upstairs bedroom.
Byron Fite was found unconscious but alive in the basement, with deputies locating a firearm nearby, suggesting he shot himself after shooting her. Plain Township paramedics rushed him to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical Center, where he remained hospitalized with life-threatening injuries as of Monday, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s office is scheduled to conduct an autopsy on Christine Fite’s body.
The unfortunate discovery was made after a concerned relative contacted the sheriff’s office around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. The relative, alarmed by Christine’s failure to communicate, requested deputies to check on her well-being. Arrangements were made for a family friend to provide access to the residence with a key.
Upon entering the home, deputies discovered both Christine and Byron Fite. The motive behind the shootings is yet to be determined, as stated by Inspector Jones. The coroner’s office believes Christine Fite was killed sometime Sunday morning.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
