In a tragic incident that took place on Friday, October 20th, at approximately 10:31 PM, Canton Police officers were dispatched to 1931 Maple Ave. NE in response to a shooting.
Police Chief John Gabbard provided details of the incident, stating that upon their arrival, officers discovered Dontae Crayton, 37, of Canton, inside the residence, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the upper body.
Officers immediately provided aid to Crayton until medical personnel from Canton Fire arrived at the scene. He was then rushed to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital for emergency treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the hospital.
Following investigative efforts, law enforcement officers were able to apprehend the alleged suspect, Savier D. Smiley, an 18-year-old resident of Canton. The suspect was taken into custody in a nearby residence shortly after the incident occurred.
