The Minerva Lions boys soccer team is moving on in the district tournament after shutting out Carrollton Monday night.
The game remained deadlocked at 0-0 at the half, but halfway through the second half, the Lions added a goal when Jeremiah Smith scored from about 30 yards out with 20 minutes left in the contest.
With under 10 minutes left in the game, Xander Mueller scored with his head after a shot bounced off the keepers hands to make it 2-0.
“Tonight’s game was the definition of what a tournament game should look like,” said Minerva coach Tyler Stewart. “A hard-fought game between two teams fighting to move on in the tournament…and that’s what we got!”
With the win, Minerva will travel to Warsaw to take on the No. 1-seed River View Black Bears at River View High School on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. for the sectional championship.
