The Canton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a local man.

The incident occurred early Friday morning at approximately 5:14 AM, on 12th St. east of Perry Drive in Perry Township.

According to the preliminary findings, Derrick P. Hill, a 35-year-old resident of Canton, was the driver of a 2002 Acura TL traveling westbound on 12th Street. Hill’s vehicle veered off the right side of the roadway and subsequently crossed over to the left side, colliding with a tree.

Hill was declared deceased at the scene by the Stark County Coroner’s office.

Investigating officers have determined that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Additionally, it is believed that excessive speed may have played a significant role in the occurrence of the crash.

Assisting the Ohio State Highway Patrol at the scene were the Perry Township Fire and EMS, Perry Police Department, and Tracers Towing.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
