Canton man killed in single vehicle crash on I-77; victim identified

The New Philadelphia State Highway Patrol Post is currently investigating a single vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 77 near mile post 94.

According to official reports, the incident took place on Thursday, August 17 at approximately 6:00 PM.

The crash involved a 2019 Ford F250 pickup truck that was traveling in the northbound direction on Interstate 77. Unexpectedly, the vehicle veered across the median, crossing both lanes of the southbound side of Interstate 77. The truck collided with several small trees and a fence.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Gary Powell, a 51-year-old resident of Canton. Following the crash, Powell was immediately transported to Mercy Hospital for medical treatment. He was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Authorities have stated that alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor in the accident. Additionally, it has been reported that Powell was wearing his safety belt at the time of the incident.

The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.
