A head-on collision between two SUVs in Columbiana County on Monday morning resulted in two individuals being airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The victims, a 46-year-old male and a 53-year-old female from East Palestine, were identified by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

They were transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown with severe injuries. The accident occurred around 7:40 a.m. in Unity Township, south of the county line, along State Route 170.

According to the Highway Patrol, a preliminary investigation revealed that a 2016 Ford Explorer traveling southwest on SR-170 crossed the center line and collided with a 2020 Chevrolet Trailblazer that was traveling northeast on SR-170.

The Chevrolet Trailblazer then veered off the road, flipped, and hit an electric fence.
