A 16-year-old was apprehended Thursday evening after crashing a stolen vehicle into a Canton Police cruiser.

According to Canton Police spokesperson Dennis Garren, a 2017 Hyundai Sonata was stolen from an unknown area in the Stark County Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction and crashed into the cruiser at 17th St and Rowland Ave N.E. Police said the stolen car was operated by 16-year-old Malachi Fortner.

Immediately after the accident, the occupants of the vehicle fled but Fortner was caught by officers. It’s unclear how many occupants were in the stolen car.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Segeant Bridget Matt said troopers were requested to the scene assist with the investigation.

Fortner was arrested and taken to the Multi-County Juvenile Attention System on Faircrest. He’s facing one count of Obstructing Official Business (F5), two counts of Felonious Assault (F1) and one count of Receiving Stolen Property (F4).

No serious injuries were reported.
