Sandy Valley’s baseball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 4-3 victory over Ridgewood Monday evening.

“I could not be more proud of our team through four games,” Sandy Valley Head Coach Andy Rasicci said.

The Cardinals got their bats going in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead. In an effort to comeback, Ridgewood scored a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning.

The Cards responded by scoring their fourth and final run in the bottom half of the inning. The Generals scored another run in the top of the seventh, but Ridgewood’s comeback fell short.

Nick Petro went the distance for the Cardinals, striking out 11 batters.

“Nick Petro has been sensational in his first two starts on the mound,” Coach Rasicci said.

Petro, a junior, has pitched two complete games so far, striking out 13 batters in his last outing. He has 24 strikeouts on the season. He’s 2-0 on the early year with a 1.50 ERA.

The Cardinals only senior, Austin Leary, went 2-3 at the plate and recorded two RBIs.

This Sandy Valley team is comprised of underclassmen, but Coach Rasicci called them very coachable.

“We are starting three freshmen and only one senior,” he said. “We have a team full of great kids that work hard and are very coachable.”
