Alliance man shot to death, suspect injured after jumping out window while fleeing from police

A 52-year-old Alliance man was shot and killed Monday morning at 5 a.m. in Canton, according to Canton Police.

Police Chief John Gabbard says officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Dueber Ave S.W. for reports of a shooting. When they arrived to the scene, they located the victim laying near the entrance of the home.

The victim, identified as 52-year-old Gary Marx of Alliance, was shot in the neck. He was transported to Aultman Hospital by the Canton Fire Department where he was pronounced dead at 5:7 a.m.

Detectives quickly identified the suspect as Jamarri Haper, 22, of the Canton and Cleveland area. Police learned Harper was at another home on Dueber Ave and obtained a search warrant.

Harper was arrested after he jumped from a second story window in an attempt to flee from officers, according to Gabbard. He remains in the hospital with injuries from the jump.

The suspect is charged with Murder (F1), Felonious Assault (F2), Aggravated Robbery (F2), Having Weapons Under Disability (F3), Receiving Stolen Property (F4).

Harper is also wanted for many active warrants in Cleveland in an unrelated case that including counts of aggravated robbery.
