Canton Police: Burglar stabbed, killed while breaking into home

The Canton Police Department is investigating a stabbing that happened in the 300 block of Clarendon Ave N.W. Sunday evening, according to Chief John Gabbard.

Police were dispatched to 346 Clarendon Ave NW. and 341 Clarendon Ave N.W. for reports of two separate burglaries in progress just before 8 p.m. When officers arrived to 341 Clarendon Ave. N.W., they found the burglary suspect laying on the kitchen floor.

According to Chief Gabbard, the suspect was stabbed by a resident of the house after entering through the rear door.

The suspect, who has been identified as 44-year-old Michael Harper of Alliance, was transported to Aultman Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Canton detectives believe Harper broke into a home at 346 Clarendon Ave N.W., confronted a resident in the up-stairs bedroom of the home before leaving the house.

Detectives will present the case to the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office as the investigation continues.
