The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that left a 14-year-old dead Wednesday night in Mineral City.

Dispatch received a call just after 8 p.m. from an 11-year-old girl who reported that her 14-year-old brother had shot himself in the head at a home on Tabor Ridge. NE.

The 11-year-old began CPR on the 14-year-old with instructions from a 911 operator until Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene, at which time they took over compressions. He was first transported to Union Hospital and then flown to Akron Children’s Hospital where he died.

According to Sheriff Orvis Campbell, the 14-year-old, 11-year-old and another 9-year-old were home alone at the time of the shooting because the adults had gone to Union Hospital earlier for medical attention related to a car accident earlier in the day.

The 14-year-old sibling reportedly lived in the Tabor Rd home while the other two siblings lived in Malvern.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the 14-year-old victim was playing with the gun when it accidentally fired.

The shooting remains under investigation.
