A couple days after I-77 southbound in Canton was shut down for hours, the Canton Police Department is releasing more information regarding the closure of the freeway on Dec. 30.

Chief John Gabbard states that officers were dispatched to Milepost 108 of I-77 Southbound for reports of a traffic accident involving a motorcycle.

When officers arrived to the scene, they located the motorcycle that was involved in the accident. The rider of the motorcycle was nowhere to be found.

Chief Gabbard says that crews shut down I-77 to look for a possibly injured motorcycle rider. When they were unable to find a rider, they re-opened the Highway.

After investigation, it was determined that a dark colored Chevy impala collided with the motorcycle, while both vehicles traveled southbound.

Investigators say that the Chevy impala fled the scene following the accident. And so did the motorcycle rider.

The motorcycle was impounded.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with any information in regards to this crime is asked to contact the Canton Police Traffic Bureau, at (330) 489-4485. Anonymous tips can also be sent through Tip411 or the Stark County Crime Stoppers. Sign up for Tip411 at www.cantonohio.gov/police
