The Ohio State Highway Patrol has confirmed the death of four people as a result of a 40+ car pileup on the Ohio Turnpike Friday.

Dozens of cars were involved in the pileup along Interstate 80 eastbound between Route 53 and State Route 4 in Sandusky County, near Groton Township and the Erie County line.

Snow and ice are contributing factors in the crash, according to OSHP.

Among the 46 reported vehicles in the pileup, 15 are said to be commercial, according to the patrol.

I-80 remained closed in both directions between exits 91 and 118 just after 9 p.m. Friday evening.

Motorists are urged to use an alternate route.
