SARTA bus catches fire on I-77; one person hospitalized in separate incident on freeway

First responders were busy in Canton Wednesday night as they battled a bus fire on I-77.

Canton firefighters were dispatched to the highway for a pair of separate incidents just after 9 p.m.

The first call was to I-77 south of West Tusc for reports of an unoccupied SARTA bus on fire. When they arrived, a motorist who was first at the scene received treatment for smoke inhalation, according to CFD.

The cause of the fire has not been released, but it’s believed to have started in the engine compartment.

The bus driver was not injured.

A car and semi colliding on I-77 before the accident scene, leaving one person hospitalized. The bus on fire may have played a role in the second crash.

Both crashes are under investigation.
