Man shot, killed in Canton by girlfriend’s father; suspect arrested

A man is dead after being shot and killed in Canton late Tuesday night around 8 p.m.

According to Canton Police, officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of 16th St N.W. for a “trouble call.” While in route, officers learned one person was shot.

When they arrived to the scene, they located Travis L. Charles, 31, of Canton laying near the back steps of the address with a gunshot wound to the head. Charles was transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital where he died at 9:02 p.m.

The suspect, Shaun M. Cunningham, 48, of Canton, was arrested at the scene and charged with Murder. Canton Police spokesman Dennis Garren confirmed to JMN that Cunningham is the father of Charles’ girlfriend.

We’ve also learned that the shooting is believed to be a result of a custody dispute.

The investigation is ongoing.
