Friday night’s 42-0 win over Strasburg was memorable for the Malvern Hornets for more than one reason.

The Hornets sophomore starting quarterback, Jared Witherow, broke Malvern’s single-game passing record with a total of 350 yards against the Tigers, which stood for over a decade. The QB accomplished the feat while going 20-for-25 with four touchdowns.

Witherow credited the ability to break the record to his offensive line and wide receivers.

“I’m very thankful for my line holding up up front and my receivers catching the ball and moving it forward. That’s the only reason I’m able to get the record, you know?” he said following the win.

The single-game passing record was previously held by Shawn Ball who set the record twice – once in 2009 and the final time in 2010 (337 yards).

Malvern Coach Matt Chiurco said the Hornets are thankful to have Witherow on the team for the next 2.5 seasons.

“It’s nice to have, I’m not going to lie. For the next couple years, to have him at quarterback, gives us a chance to win week-in and week-out,” he said. “He still has a lot to learn, but he’s doing a really good job.”

The Hornets dominated the game from the first kickoff, leading 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and 35-0 at halftime. Malvern accumulated 399 total yards.

Malvern sophomore Drake Hutchison scored the Hornets first touchdown of the game on a two-yard run. Rodney Smith hauled in a pair of touchdowns from 17 and 43 yards out. Dylan Phillips also caught two touchdowns from 15 yards and 18 yards.

Smith finished as Malvern’s leading receiver with six catches for 122 yards. Phillips racked up 113 yards on nine receptions. KJ Walfer caught four passes for 85 yards.

Drake Hutchison led the Hornets rushing attack with 31 yards on seven carries.

With the win, Malvern moves to 5-1 on the season. They will travel to Buckeye Trail next Friday to take on the Warriors at 7 p.m.
