HS Sports Thursday: Tusky Valley volleyball staves off TCC rally; Carrollton sweeps Dover

Tuscarawas Central Catholic staged rallies in the second and fourth sets of what would be a five-set Tuscarawas Valley volleyball win (25-23, 25-27, 25-20, 28-26, 15-12) on Thursday night in New Philadelphia.

The Trojans (2-0) were led by Aubrie Barr’s 14 points and Emma Howard’s 19 kills, along with 28 assists from Sydney Haas. Locie Levengood added 53 digs for Tusky.

For the Saints (0-2), Maddie Ferrell had 18 kills, 13 digs, and 20 assists, while Reese Triplett added 13 kills and 18 digs.

CARROLLTON 25-25-25, DOVER 23-21-19

Carrollton took down Dover in straight sets on Thursday.

Bri Shockley led the Warriors (2-2) with 16 points (2 aces), while Caroline Hanner scored six points for the Crimson Tornadoes (1-2). Hanner also had five blocks and eight kills.

HILAND 25-24-25-32-15, WAYNEDALE 20-26-13-34-12

An extended fourth set was won by Hiland, in what would be a five-set Thursday night win for the Hawks over Waynedale.

Ava Troyer had 27 kills for the Hawks (3-0), while Haley Yoder (13 points, 16 kills, 21 digs) and Ava Weaver (14 points, 48 assists, 16 digs) contributed to the Hiland win.

CLAYMONT 20-25-25-25, STRASBURG 25-11-18-21

Claymont overcame a dropped first set to beat the Strasburg Tigers in four frames.

Ada Richards (11 points, 9 assists, 9 digs) and Aubrey Thomas (13 assists, 10 digs) led the Tigers in the loss.

GARAWAY 25-25-25, NEWCOMERSTOWN 6-14-11

Garaway dominated Newcomerstown on Thursday.

Morgan Schlabach had 11 kills for the Pirates (along with eight digs and seven aces), while Shelby Gerber had 12 assists and 12 digs).

The Pirates improved to 3-1 with the victory.

INDIAN VALLEY 25-25-25, EAST CANTON 6-10-8

Indian Valley took care of East Canton on Thursday night.

Sadie Dryden led the Braves with 24 points, 7 aces, 19 assists, 6 kills, 2 digs

SANDY VALLEY 25-25-25, MALVERN 8-7-14

Sandy Valley beat Malvern in straight sets.

The Cardinals (4-0) got 12 points and 28 assists from Zoe Ward, while Lexi Tucci added 13 kills.

NEW PHILADELPHIA 166, WEST HOLMES 171

New Philadelphia bested West Holmes by five shots on Thursday at Fire Ridge.

Louis Devore led the Quakers with a 40, along with qualifying scores from Nathan Menapale (41), Gavin Blake (42), and Connor Rippeth (43).

Grady Toye shot a match-best 35 for the Knights, while Trey Baker added a 41 in the loss.

HILAND 168, MALVERN 192

Hiland topped Malvern at Great Trail on Thursday.

Jack Mast led the Hawks with a 41, while Lucas Yoder and Nathan Kline each added 42s. Camden Bille chipped in a 43.

Ethan Bush led Malvern with a 44.

LOUISVILLE 155, SANDY VALLEY 174

The Louisville Leopards beat Sandy Valley in a Thursday match at Sleepy Hollow.

Jack Mayle led Louisville (3-1) with an even-par 36, while Zach Root (38), Cole Miller (40), and Sam Karcher (41) added to the Leopards’ win.

Connor Ritter also fired an even-par 36, while John Wood added a 44 for Sandy.

GIRLS GOLF

GARAWAY 156, TUSCARAWAS VALLEY 185, INDIAN VALLEY 214

Host Garaway won a triangular match with Indian Valley and Tusky Valley on Thursday at Black Gold.

Sydni Prysi shot a match-best 36, along with Sammi Miller’s 37 and Brooklyn Numbers’ 41 to lead the Pirates. Hannah Steiner also shot a 42 for Garaway.

For the Trojans, Addy Carroll, Kathryn Secoy, and Alaina Rini John each posted a 46.

Emily Jones led Indian Valley with a 49.

STRASBURG 233, BUCKEYE TRAIL 251

Strasburg’s girls picked up a road win over Buckeye Trail at Hickory Flats.

Hayler Reiger led the Tigers (2-2) with a 51, while Micah Burkett (60), Olivia Spidell (61), and Mya McGhee (61) rounded out the Strasburg scores.

Marietta dropped Dover to 1-1-1 with a Thursday win.

Joshua Smith scored the Crimson Torandoes’ lone goal on an assist from Arden Klaiber.

TUSCARAWAS VALLEY 10, AKRON ELLET 0

Tusky Valley decimated Akron Ellet in a Thursday boys’ match.

Austin Brothers, Landon Burwell, Colin Kuharich, and Aaron Murphy each scored a pair of goals, while Guiherme Ferreira and Caleb McCroury added scores for the Trojans.

Tusky Valley improved to 2-0, while Ellet fell to 0-2. 

CARROLLTON 4, MASSILLON 3

Carrollton etched a Thursday win over Massillon.

John Pesta scored two goals for the Warriors, while Dylan Schaar and Andrew Steffen also scored for Carrollton.

HILAND 3, WAYNEDALE 0

Hiland’s girls shut out Waynedale on Thursday, not allowing a shot on goal to the Golden Bears.

Kate Kaufman had a pair of goals for the Hawks, and Lydia Mast added one goal for the victors.

Hiland improved to 2-1 with the win, while Waynedale dropped to 1-1.

DOVER 4, CLAYMONT 1

Dover nearly swept Claymont in a Thursday night match.

Taylor Rose beat. Arianna Teradekis (6-0, 6-1) in singles play, while Kaleigh McCutcheon topped Brooke Davis (6-3, 6-3) and Josie Pinelli defeated Makayla Kendall (6-1, 6-0).

In doubles, Hallie Lint and Bella Maize (Dov) beat Malaika and Meagan Douglass (6-0, 6-0), while Emily Luyster and Maddison Houston earned Claymont’s lone match win over Avery Contini and Katlyn Hines (6-4, 6-1).

Dover improved to 8-0 with the victory.
