The East Canton Hornets were on the end of a lopsided defeat against the Dalton Bulldogs in Friday night’s home opener for the Hornets.
The Bulldogs came into East Canton and hit the ground running, amassing 452 yards with 327 of the yards being earned via the running game.
Dalton scored near the midway mark of the first quarter when Greyson Siders darted to the end-zone for a 14-yard touchdown to put the visiting Bulldogs ahead 7-0 with 7:21 remaining in the first quarter. That was one of four times Siders scored a touchdown for the Dawgs.
Just a few minutes later, Siders took the ball and scored on a two-yard run. With :38 remaining in the first quarter, Dalton junior QB Colin Pearson connected with Siders on a 65-yard touchdown pass to put the Bulldogs ahead 21-0.
Siders ran for 155 yards on 14 carries. He hauled in 121 yards in the passing game on three receptions; scoring a total of four touchdowns.
Just under three minutes into the second quarter, East Canton got on the board.
Brennan Betz hooked up with Toby Schrader for a 23-yard pass, which was juggled and got for a touchdown. Ben Gallagher’s kick was good. Dalton led 21-7.
The Bulldogs held a 35-7 lead at halftime.
Betz connected with Chanie Stubblefield on a 32-yard pass for six points late in the third quarter for East Canton. Stubblefield hauled in three passes for 40 yards.
Dalton won the non-conference contest 42-13.
East Canton’s Betz finished the contest 13-of-22 for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Jake McCullough finished the game as the Hornets’ leading rusher, earning 67 yards on seven carries.
East Canton will travel to United to take on the Golden Eagles next Friday. Dalton is scheduled to host the Tuslaw Mustangs.
