HS Sports Monday: Miller throws 4th perfect game for New Philadelphia; Garaway, Tusky Valley earn opening tourney wins; Strasburg captures IVC North softball title

Garaway opened the Division III East District softball tournament with a 14-1 five-inning win over Buckeye Local on Monday.

Isabelle Tetreault went the distance for the Pirates, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out five.

Jordyn Keim’s three hits included a single, double, and home run for 4 RBIs, while Jodi Mast drove in three runs via two singles.

The Lady Bucs will play Fort Frye in Thursday’s sectional final (5 p.m.) in Sugarcreek.

EAST CANTON 12, SEBRING 6

East Canton opened tournament play with a Monday victory over host McKinley Sebring.

The Hornets scored nine runs in the top of the 2nd and were led by Hannah Spencer, Ellie Starnes, and Tori Alspaugh, who each went 2-for-4 at the plate.

For Sebring, Olivia Hawk recorded three singles.

TUSCARAWAS VALLEY 10, COSHOCTON 0

Tusky Valley opened sectional tournament play with a win over Coshocton on Monday.

The Trojans will take on Cambridge in the sectional finals on Thursday at 5 p.m.

EDISON 12, SANDY VALLEY 0 (5 INN.)

Edison’s 6-run 4th inning sank visiting Sandy Valley in Monday’s sectional semifinal.

Alayna Meadows went 3-for-3 with a home run and two singles to total 7 RBIs for the Wildcats.

Carysyn Dine recorded the Cardinals’ lone hit as Sandy Valley finishes at 6-15.

CAMBRIDGE 11, BUCKEYE TRAIL 2

Cambridge won over Buckeye Trail to advance to Thursday’s Division III East Sectional finals.

MARTINS FERRY 17, HILAND 0 (5 INN.)

Top-seeded Martins Ferry took care of Hiland in Monday’s Division III East tournament opener.

The Lady Riders will face No. 7 Edison on Thursday.

HARRISON CENTRAL 10, RIDGEWOOD 0 (6 INN.)

No. 2 Harrison Central won their sectional semifinal against No. 14 Ridgewood in six frames on Monday.

Central will play No. 8 Union Local on Thursday.

WEST HOLMES 3, RIVER VIEW 1

West Holmes won on the road over host River View to open the Division II East Sectional tournament.

The 13th-seeded Knights will advance to play 3rd-seeded Tri-Valley on Wednesday.

SOFTBALL – REGULAR SEASON

NEW PHILADELPHIA 5, MADISON 0

New Philadelphia right-hander Julia Miller pitched her fourth perfect game of the season in Monday’s Quaker victory over Madison.

Miller struck out 19 batters, while Ellie Mason led the New Phila offense with a single and a double.

STRASBURG 11, TUSCARAWAS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 0 (5 INN.)

Strasburg-Franklin captured the Inter-Valley Conference North Division’s softball title on Monday with a five-inning win over the Tuscarawas Central Catholic Saints.

Emma Gilkerson tied a school record with her 36th career home run – a 2-run shot to end the game in a mercy rule for the Tigers (18-3).

Sydney Sibila added a single and a double for two RBIs for Strasburg, while JaeLynn Marks had a double and two runs driven in.

STRASBURG 2, CONOTTON VALLEY 1

Before the Tigers and Saints faced off, Strasburg bested host Conotton Valley in a close final.

Winning pitcher Amelia Spidell scattered five hits and a first-inning run to go with 11 strikeouts.

Hayley Reiger rallied the Tigers in the top of the 6th with a 2-run single that scored Spidell and Rylee Becker.

Rockets left-hander Masy Baker recorded her 200th career strikeout.

The Tigers are set to open the Division IV East District softball tournament on Tuesday in a home game against Malvern.

LOUISVILLE 13, MINERVA 6

Matti Benson hit her school record-tying 11th home run of the season as Louisville beat Minerva on Monday night.

Benson went 3-for-4 for the Leopards with an RBI, while Brooke Haren drove in three runs and scored twice.

Jada Shafer had a pair of RBIs for the Lions (5-13).

STEUBENVILLE 9, CARROLLTON 1

The Big Red bested the Warriors in a Monday contest.

BASEBALL

GARAWAY 8, HILAND 3 (8 INN.)

Garaway broke out for seven runs in the top of the 8th in a conference victory over Hiland on Monday in Berlin.

Preston Miller earned a relief win for the Pirates after starter Brady Roden pitched seven innings for Garaway.

The Pirates move to 6-4 in IVC South play and 13-4 overall.

MALVERN 4, CONOTTON VALLEY 2

Malvern earned a Monday road win over host Conotton Valley.

Ethan Bush roped three singles for the Hornets’ offense, while Dylan Phillips contributed a pair of RBIs.

Tristan Phillips earned the pitching win for Malvern (11-9), while Johnny Walker picked up a save.

Brook Bower had two singles for the Rockets.

COSHOCTON 12, CLAYMONT 0 (5 INN.)

Coshocton topped Claymont via the mercy rule on Monday.

The ‘Skins were led by winning pitcher Hudson Wesney, who also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Blake Alexander added two hits, including an RBI double, for Coshocton.

STRASBURG 17, NEWCOMERSTOWN 1 (5 INN.)

Strasburg’s offense jumped on Newcomerstown quick and often in Monday’s five-inning showdown.

Derek Rissler, Matt Cox, Hunter McKenzie, Mason Wagner, Evan Rissler, Nick Martin, and Alex Burkett all had multiple hits for Strasburg.

Drake Reifenschneider pitched all five innings for the Tigers (8-12, 7-3 IVC North).

CAMBRIDGE 8, MORGAN 5

The Cambridge Bobcats capped off their Senior Night with a 3-run victory over visiting Morgan.

Bobcats reliever Keaton Kyser threw four shutout innings, allowing one hit while striking out one and walking one in relief for starter Caden Moore (3.0 IP, 3 hits, 5 runs, 6 K’s).

Caleb Bond had two hits for Cambridge, including a 3-run RBI triple.

RIDGEWOOD 6, SANDY VALLEY 3

The Ridgewood Generals sealed a Monday win over the Sandy Valley Cardinals.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE 10, HARRISON CENTRAL 0

St. Clairsville topped Harrison Central on Monday night.
