Indian Valley junior Mia Rose struck out 23 New Philadelphia batters as the Braves bested the Quakers, 2-0, in Tuesday’s season-opening softball game at Tuscora Park.

GARAWAY 5, HARRISON CENTRAL 0

The Garaway Pirates opened the spring season with a shutout victory on Tuesday against Harrison Central.

Isabelle Tetreault struck out eight batters in a complete game performance while also recording three RBIs at the plate.

Jordyn Keim and Meghan Petitte each had two triples, while Jodi Mast recorded a pair of doubles for the Lady Bucs.

CLAYMONT 17, RIDGEWOOD 3

Claymont High School mercy-ruled Ridgewood in a five-inning affair on Tuesday.

Skylar Schilling and winning pitcher Rylee Groah went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs each for the Mustangs.

BASEBALL

NEW PHILADELPHIA 8, INDIAN VALLEY 4

New Philadelphia won their baseball season opener against Indian Valley on Tuesday at Tuscora.

Carter Vandall scattered five hits and struck out five in a winning outing, while also drilling a home run in the contest.

Brandt Wells also drove in two runs for the Quakers, while Elliott Warner had two hits.

The Braves were led in batting by Rafe Bonifay (2 hits) and Tanyon McComb (2 RBIs).

ST. CLAIRSVILLE 7, DOVER 3

St. Clairsville spoiled Dover’s season debut on Tuesday at St. Clairsville.

The Crimson Tornadoes committed three errors in the loss.

Nolan Kellicker had a pair of singles for Dover (0-1).

GARAWAY 2, TUSCARAWAS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 0

Garaway bested IVC foe Tuscarawas Central Catholic in a Tuesday season opener.

Doran Mast went five innings for the Bucs, while Preston Miller threw the final two innings.

MINERVA 7, WEST BRANCH 4

The Minerva Lions overcame four errors in the first two innings of their 7-4 season-opening victory over West Branch in Tuesday baseball action.

The Warriors jumped out the a 4-2 lead early on before the Lions rallied with scores in each of the final three innings.

Nick Lautzenheiser (1-0) earned the win in a five-inning outing, recording eight strikeouts and only walking three batters.

Frank Common went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored for the Lions.

RIDGEWOOD 9, CLAYMONT 0

The Ridgewood Generals opened IVC play with a shutout win over Claymont on Tuesday.

Kavelen Smith and Kolby Masloski each recorded a double for Ridgewood, while Jack Langdon recorded the Mustangs’ only hit of the contest.

WEST HOLMES 4, MANSFIELD MADISON 1

The West Holmes Knights opened the season with an Ohio Cardinal Conference win over Mansfield Madison on Tuesday.

Noah Clark struck out 10 and scattered two hits in 4 2/3 innings for West Holmes.

Carrollton’s track and field squads swept their Tuesday team matches against Beaver Local.

Marlington swept Carrollton in an Eastern Buckeye Conference match at Community Field.

Dover opened its boys’ tennis season with a team victory over East Liverpool.

Nick Castricone defeated Preston Dawson (6-2, 6-2) in singles play, while Daniel Pfeiffer beat Ayden Wright (6-0, 6-1) and Micah Lint shut out Coner Ghrist (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles, Ethan Kopp and Jake Murphy swept Preston Dawson and Liam Campbell (6-0, 6-0) while Ryan Nixon and Quinten Troyer blanked Mark Antonio and Damon Stansbury (6-0, 6-0).

HILAND 5, CLAYMONT 0

The Hiland Hawks beat IVC rival Claymont in Tuesday’s season-opening match at Berlin.

In singles play, Garrett Shoup defeated Koi Preston (6-3, 7-6), Caelan Howell beat Maddux Maple (6-2, 6-4), and Wyatt Freeman topped Emma Lesiecki (6-0, 6-1).

In doubles play, Zach Mullet and Kurt Kaufman beat Maddie Houston and Brooke Davis (6-3, 6-2), while Alex Jones and Matt Yoder defeated Owen Cox and Emily Luyster (6-1, 6-1).
