Malvern wins East sectional title in 53-33 victory over Strasburg

MALVERN, Ohio (JMN Sports) – The Malvern Hornets won their 16th consecutive Sectional title in a 53-33 final over Strasburg-Franklin High School in the Division IV East Sectional final on Friday night.

The victory for the Hornets was their third over the Tigers for the 2021-22 season and advances them to the East District semifinals.

Michael Minor led the Hornets in scoring (15 points) and rebounding (six boards), while Dylan Phillips (10 points) and Drake Delong (eight points) added to the home team’s victory.

The Hornets overcame an 8-6 deficit to Strasburg after the opening quarter to lead 17-515 at halftime. 13-5 and 20-13 advantages in the third and fourth quarters put Malvern over the edge to take the Friday night postseason contests.

Joe Fischer led the Tigers in scoring with a game-high 16 points and five rebounds, while Landon Potopsky and Andrew Harvey were held to five points apiece for Strasburg, who ends its season at 15-9.

The Hornets move to 20-4 and will play in next Tuesday’s East District semifinal at 7 p.m. against Shadyside. The game will be played at Harrison Central High School.
